Open source

TakeCutter's video export is powered by FFmpeg 8.1.2, bundled unmodified and used under the GNU Lesser General Public License, version 2.1. The same notice and the full licence text are in the app under TakeCutter ▸ Acknowledgements.

The build

The bundled helper is a static FFmpeg 8.1.2 for arm64, configured with VideoToolbox hardware encoding and FFmpeg's native AAC encoder only. It contains no GPL-licensed components — no libx264, no libx265, nothing from --enable-gpl. The exact configuration is embedded in the binary itself and can be printed with ffmpeg -version.

Getting the source

Unmodified FFmpeg 8.1.2 source is available from ffmpeg.org and the upstream git repository. Because TakeCutter's copy is unmodified, that upstream release is the corresponding source.

The script that fetches and builds it — which is also the record of the exact configure flags used — ships in the app's own repository as Scripts/build-ffmpeg.sh. If you would like a copy of that script or of the built object files in order to relink the helper against your own FFmpeg, as LGPL section 6 provides for, get in touch and I'll send them.

Footage in the screenshots

The video visible in this site's screenshots is Big Buck Bunny, © 2008 Blender Foundation, used under CC BY 3.0. It stands in for a rehearsal recording so the app can be shown doing its job without publishing someone's choir. It is not part of the app and isn't distributed with it.

Everything else

The app itself is written in Swift on Apple's own frameworks — SwiftUI, AVFoundation, Core Image, AppKit — with no third-party dependencies. The bundled LUTs are camera log to Rec.709 conversions generated from published transfer-function maths, not redistributed vendor files.
